NMC has planned a series of courses for 2010. The courses will be held in Bergen, Oslo, Trondheim and Tromsø.

The courses in Oslo and Bergen will have the same topics, which means that it is possible to e.g. do the introduction course in Oslo and the Analysis course in Bergen and vice versa. Knowledge of the topics covered in the introduction course is expected for the analysis course, see course plans further down on this page.

In addition we have a Lab and Analysis course in Trondheim and an analysis course in Tromsø.

All are open to anyone interested in learning more about microarrays and the analysis of microarray data.

Introduction to Microarrays, Bergen, 21. -22. September 2010

The introductory course is a two day course and is aimed at scientists who are new to microarrays or those who want to learn about experimental design. Main topics to be covered are:

  • Microarray pipeline
  • Microarray technologies and applications
    • Microarray platforms
    • Other types of arrays (SNP arrays, ChIP chip etc.)
  • Experimental design
  • Preprocessing of microarray data
    • Quality control, filtering, normalisation
  • Finding differentially expressed genes using t-test
  • Introduction to explorative methods, such as clustering and PCA
  • Get familiar with looking at gene graphs

NMC will host a microarray technology and data analysis - including laboratory training course 15-19th of March 2010 at NTNU in Trondheim.

Course description:

The course is meant as an introduction for students and scientists who either plan to start using the technique, or who work in a laboratory where microarray is established. The course covers the main areas of microarray technology through lectures. It also aims to provide the participants with some practical experience in Microarray technology through a laboratory course including labeling of probe, microarray hybridization by using Illumina BeadChip technology.

Registration before the 15th of February 2010. for further information click here or contact Vidar Beisvåg (vidar.beisvag@ntnu.no).

Course in analyzing microarrays using J-express 20-22th of April 2010 in Bergen.

This is a 3 day course where J-Express will be used as an analysis tool. This course builds on the Introduction to microarrays course, so knowledge about the microarray technology is expected. We intend to focus on practical exercises in this course where pre-processed and normalized microarray data will be used as analysis material. The main topics to be covered are:

  • Working with J-Express functionality
  • Groups
  • Sub datasets
  • Use different analysis modules in sequence to investigate different parts of the data
  • Experimental design including practical task
  • Differential expression
  • SAM/t-test/Rank Product
  • Gene Set Analysis
  • Explorative methods (PCA / PLS / CA / clustering)
  • Time Series (briefly)

We encourage people who need early confirmation of acceptance to the course to register by 25th of March. We will then let you know on the 26th whether you get a place. The final registration will end on April 6th.
