Upcoming courses and work shops

NMC has planned a series of courses and workshops for 2008. In principle we have 3 different courses: Introduction to microarrays, Analysis using R/Bioconductor and Analysis using J-Express. Exceptions are the Lab and Analysis course in Trondheim and the first analysis course in Bergen, which will be a combined introduction and analysis course. The workshops are a forum for everyone working with microarrays to get help analysing own data  and to discuss particular interesting topics.

All are open to anyone interested in learning more about microarrays and the analysis of microarray data.

NMC Workshops 2008

The workshops provide a great opportunity for you to get help analysing your own data and to discuss interesting ways of analysing data. In addition we plan focus each of these workshops on spesific topics that can be of interest both for people who have worked on microarrays for some time and for those who are new to it.

NMC will host a microarray technology and data analysis - including laboratory training course 3-7 March 2008 at NTNU in Trondheim.

Course description:

The course is meant as an introduction for students and scientists who either plan to start using the technique, or who work in a laboratory where microarray is established. The course covers the main areas of microarray technology through lectures. It also aims to provide the participants with some practical experience in Microarray technology through a laboratory course including labeling of probe, microarray hybridization by using Illumina BeadChip technology.

The course includes approximately 15 hours of self study in advance of the course, 23 hours with lectures and 18 hours laboratory work.

Registration must be sent to Vidar Beisvåg (vidar.beisvag@ntnu.no) before the 7th of February 2008.

Introduction to microarrays and Analysis of microarrays using J-Express - Bergen 23th-25th April 2008

Since this series of courses are new and there hasn't been a chance to have a introductory course before the analysis course that we are giving in Bergen, we will teach the main objectives from the introductory course in the beginning of this course. We intend to focus on  practicals in this course, main topics to be covered are:

  • Microarray pipeline
  • Experimental design including practical task
  • Preprocessing of microarray data
    • Quality control, filtering, normalisation (no practical)
  • Quick introduction of R/Bioconductor
  • Differential expression
    • SAM/t-test/Rank Product
  • Gene Set Analysis
  • Time Series
  • Explorative methods (PCA / PLS / CA / clustering)

Introduction to Microarrays - Bergen 17th - 18th of September 2008

The introductory course is a two day course and is aimed at scientists who are new to microarrays or those who want to learn about experimental design. Main topics to be covered are:

  • Microarray pipeline
  • Experimental design
  • Technologies
    • Microarray platforms
    • Other types of arrays (SNP arrays, ChIP chip etc.)
  • Preprocessing of microarray data
    • Quality control, filtering, normalisation
  • Finding differentially expressed genes using t-test
  • Introduction to explorative methods, such as clustering
  • Get familiar with looking at gene graphs

Analysing microarrays using J-Express - Oslo - 20. - 22. of October

This is a 3 day course where J-Express will be used as an analysis tool. This course builds on the Introduction to microarrays course, so knowledge about the microarray technology is expected. We intend to focus on practical exercises in this course where pre-processed and normalized microarray data will be used as analysis material. The main topics to be covered are:

  • Quick presentation of the microarray pipeline
  • Experimental design
  • Differential expression
    • SAM/t-test/Rank Product
  • Gene Set Analysis
  • Gene Ontology
  • Time series
  • Explorative methods (PCA, clustering etc.)
  • Quick introduction of R/Bioconductor

The course will be limit to 15 participants (minimum 7) and the course fee is 900 NOK.
