Postdoctoral positions available
posted by Thea Charlotte Sogn on Jun 25 2009

A post doctoral position focused on deep sequencing techniques, partly responsible for establishing of such technology at our microarray facility, and partly a scientific position using such technologies within our research projects, is available, with an application deadline of August 15th 2009.See the full announcement.

Postdoctoral research fellow (researcher) position

tentative start date October 1st, 2009

A postdoctoral research fellowship (alternatively “Researcher” position) in second-generation sequencing is available at the DEPARTMENT OF MOLECULAR BIOSCIENCES, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo. The candidate will work at the Institute for Cancer research at the Norwegian Radium Hospital. The appointment is for three years, with a possibility for extension.

The postdoctoral position is part of the FUGE Microarray Platform, and is funded by the Molecular Life Science Board of UiO.
We seek a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow/researcher to participate in cutting edge genomics research through establishing and using second generation sequencing technologies at the Rikshospitalet/University of Oslo Microarray Core Facility (physically located at the new research building at Radiumhospitalet).

The Microarray Core Facility (MACF) is a founding member of the Norwegian Microarray Consortium (NMC, microarray.no) and for the last decade has provided the scientific community with state of the art microarray services, and is running the Oslo node of the National microarray platform financed by FUGE. The candidate will be part of the NMC team with responsibility for the implementation of this technology, but will also participate in research.

During the last years, high-throughput sequencing has been developed into a massively parallel microarray format, allowing the new generation of “deep” sequencing machines to determine billions of basepairs of sequence, or a complete genome, in a few days. This technology is revolutionizing research with its single base resolution and quantitative reads, and it is currently being implemented in an increasing number of applications previously based on traditional microarrays, i.e. genome and transcriptome (re)sequencing, epigenome studies and DNA-protein interactions.

The post doc will be a part of our small but enthusiastic genomics team, and will be our anchor for deep sequencing technology, which will be established together with the MACF team, our bioinformatics facility, and other NMC members in Bergen and Trondheim. We also have international advisors from top international centers well experienced in deep sequencing. The post doc will do research using the newly established technology, involving sequencing of the genome and transcriptome of cancer samples, as well as studying epigenetic mechanisms that control normal mesenchymal differentiation and cancer stem cells. The position includes also a service function (25%) to the users of the FUGE Platform, and when the technology is well established, the post doc will also participate in projects from external groups.

Please contact Professor Ola Myklebost or Researcher Leonardo A. Meza-Zepeda at the addresses below for more details on the project.

The candidate should hold a PhD degree or equivalent and have experience with molecular biology, preferably in fields relevant for our research, but this is no requirement. A keen mind for genomics and sense for technology is required, and competence in bioinformatics will be an advantage. Personal characteristics, such as communication and collaboration skills, will be given careful consideration, based also on evaluation by given references and interviews with the best candidates.

The position is available from October 1st, 2009 for a period of three years, with a possibility for extension. Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian PhD/doctoral degree. The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines.  Candidates who have already been employed as post doc may be employed as Researcher. Please also refer to the regulations pertaining to the conditions of employment for post-doctoral fellowship positions:
